About the course

Marbling, which enjoys a special place in Turkish book arts, is an ancient form of visual art which came to prominence in the 14th century, but possibly dates back even further. Join artist Ebru Kocak, who will guide you through the centuries-old technique of marbling to create your own beautiful patterned papers on this exciting and enjoyable hands-on workshop. Paper Marbling is a precious and traditional form of art in which natural earth pigments are sprinkled onto water using special brushes. The water is thickened with Tragacanth gum or Carrageenan (also called Irish moss). The resulting patterns are then transferred onto a sheet of paper which is laid onto the thickened water. In this workshop you will learn how to apply colourful paints to your tray of thickened water, use different tools to create striking patterns full of fluid movement, and how to transfer your pattern to paper. Every tray prepared leads to a distinct and unique adventure of exploration. About Ebru Kocak Marbling is also often referred to as Turkish Paper or by its original name ‘Ebru’.  Ebru’s own love affair with this incredible art form was almost preordained, as her given name is also Ebru. She studied and graduated with a Masters degree from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul and had the privilege of being taught by Hikmet Barutçuǧil, one of the most inspirational living masters of the art.
Ebru has learned her skill from the roots up, from crafting her own brushes to creating her own paints and quickly discovered that there was a real magic in the art of marbling.  All materials provided. Tutor: Ebru Kocak
